What we get up to in the dark

I could only imagine what my neighbors thought last night as I caught the chicks roosting in the honeysuckle bush behind their coop. It's a mature bush so some of the chicks were on branches over six feet high. One by one, each shrieking bloody murder; such vulnerable little beings, trusting (not really) me to take care of them.

No luck trapping the possum, but I know it's still out there.

I know the noise those "captured" chickens make! Seems every year we raise a new batch of pullets some of them don't get the idea of going into the house at night and we have to get them out of the trees. A big (pain) chore and it usually takes more than a week to teach them they have to go into the house at night!

Mine are all back in the coops tonight, although some decided they still like hanging with the big girls.

I'm wondering if the possum has experience with traps and has learned to avoid them. Darn people who catch and release!

Especially people who catch and the release in your back 40! I have a few chickens who have been hysterics since chick-hood. You'd think they would realize that I mean them no harm.

Have you checked with your local Game Warden/Natural Resource Officer? Sometimes they will remove problem animals, can give you help, or refer you to a professional. I have heard canned cat food makes a good bait.

In Tennessee it is illegal to relocate live wildlife by private citizens.

We asked for help one year when a mink wiped out our flock overnight. The response was 'sorry, nothing we can do'. I don't have much faith in them.

Oh I can't imagine the sound! Hope you catch that possum, nasty stuff to think about...
