Pre-rain

Lots of watering involved in this unusually hot, dry season...

So far, staying ahead of the drying winds and sun. I'm going to miss the lettuce when it bolts; it's all self-seeded from last year.

The cats killed a vole in the night. Instinct must drive them because they won't eat voles (unlike mice which get munched down straight away.

Loki is the top hunter.

Putting away firewood for the winter. The wood guy is nice, but has never heated with wood himself, so doesn't quite get that it doesn't dry properly before being split. I'll stack some outside to speed the drying process.

Something that I found that helps in deep watering my raised beds is watering bottles. Take food grade plastic bottles, I like juice or sport drink bottles because of the wide mouth, cut or drill some small holes or slits in the bottom. Bury with the bottom at the depth you want to water.

Advantages: Slow watering that is soaked into the ground. You can water any time of the day or evening, no worries about water droplets on the leaves in the sun or overnight. No splashing of ground spores onto leaves. You can apply compost tea and other supplements directly to the roots. Doesn't water the surface where weed seeds are. If you as lazy as I am, fill other, smaller mouth plastic bottles, and tip them upside down into the buried bottles.

I love to see a beautiful stack of firewood, whether the stack is organized or not! And your garden beds! Looking good!

Such green lushness in your beds! I've got a couple successions of lettuce and salad greens planted, but we're entering into hot weather now so I don't know how they'll do. In the meantime, we're stuffing in the salads as fast as we can!

Your picture of the wood reminds me we've still got a lot of wood work to do. How to fit it in with everything else??

Funny how your wood guy doesn't get the basics! Almost everyone around me heats with wood in one way or another. Your raised beds look fabulous! I'm with Freebirde, I use that method to water my tomatoes so that I can keep the amount of water the same and regulate the timing.

Oh gosh that's one thing we don't need to worry about thus far...it's been RAINY...and humid. I barely have to water. Actually I'm hoping for some dry weather so the plants stop stalling! I love the look of that wood pile!

Freebirde, that's a great idea for watering. When it stops raining again, I'll try it.

Thanks, Leigh. I'm addicted to having enough wood. That pile got put away and the next is there waiting for me.

Mama Pea, you are the wood guru as far as I'm concerned. I always envy your stacks.

Susan, when he dropped off the latest load, he mentioned that about not drying until split! But he still only splits right before delivering.

Rain, raining rain. You may be doomed. ;)
